Want Some Citrus Fruit But Also Save Money? Plant Some Citrus Trees In Your Yard

Posted on: 8 December 2022

If you would like citrus fruits on your table, these can be expensive when purchased from a store. To help you, you should plant some citrus trees. This not only gives you the fruit that you want, but it also adds to your landscaping. Below is information on different types of citrus trees you can plant, as well as tips on caring for them.

Types of Citrus Trees

One type of citrus tree is the Trifoliate orange tree. This type of citrus tree grows well in colder regions. It can also handle frost much better than other types of orange trees. There is also sweet orange, blood oranges, navel oranges, and oranges that do not have acid. These trees can be planted just about anywhere.

There are also tangerine trees, which include satsumas, mandarins, and tangerines. Tangerines are much smaller than standard fruits, so they are a great choice if you have children and want to put an orange in their lunchbox.

Another type of citrus tree is the grapefruit tree. Grapefruit trees grow best in tropical areas, such as Florida, Hawaii, Texas, and Louisiana. You can plant the grapefruit tree in the spring after the first frost or in the fall before the first frost.

There are lemon citrus fruit trees. Like grapefruit trees, lemon trees grow best in warm climates. Because lemons are small, you may be able to plant your lemon tree in a pot. If so, you can move it inside during the cold winter months. If you do this make sure the tree gets enough sunlight to stay healthy.

Caring for Citrus Trees

To ensure your citrus trees are healthy you need to learn how to care for them. First, they need to be planted correctly. If you do not have experience doing this, hire a landscape contractor to plant your citrus trees for you.  Make sure the soil is well drained. If not, there are additives you can add to make the soil drain better. A landscape contractor can check the soil for you.

The citrus trees must get full sun each day or they will not produce fruit for you. A landscape contractor will choose the best area of your yard to plant the trees.

Giving the citrus trees enough water is also important for the production of fruit. If you have new trees planted, you should water them about three times each week during the first year. After this, you can water them about one time per week.
